School districts across Michigan are planning for significant budget challenges as a result of the staggering economy in Michigan. The majority of school funding is allocated by the state to school districts. Most of this money comes from a portion of income tax, sales tax and property tax statewide.
With fewer workers and declining property values, the state is seeing less revenue from these taxing sources. As a result, school districts are seeing budget deficits and making budget cuts. The federal government is helping out with ARRA (American Reinvestment and Recovery Act) stimulus funds to states. This will help soften the financial impact to school districts, but cannot cover the state revenue shortfalls. Thus, next school year, and even more so in the following year (2010-11), school districts are facing financial challenges they have not seen in many, many decades, if ever.
School districts across the state will need to work with Lansing for solutions if school programs are to remain.
