What are “LPAC” and “WCPAC”?
If you are
the parent of a child receiving special education services, you have a
large list of acronyms that you have to use. We’ve all been in
conversations where it sounds more like a spelling bee than two adults
LPAC stands for the Livonia Parent Advisory
Committee. WCPAC stands for Wayne County Parent Advisory Committee.
Never heard of them? Don’t worry; you are not the only one. Members of
these PACs are actively trying to let people know of our existence.
Let’s start with the WCPAC. Each intermediate school district in Michigan is required to appoint a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC),
composed of representatives from each of its constituent districts. The
representatives “shall consist only of parents of students with
disabilities with at least 1 parent from each constituent local school
district and public school academy... (Rule 340.1838 Michigan Department
of Education Revised Administrative rules for Special Education,
November 2002). In Wayne County, this is the WCPAC. WCPAC Members often
serve as an information source for other parents in their community.
Each monthly business meeting of the WCPAC includes a parent training
segment on issues identified by the members. The WCPAC Member for
Livonia is Eileen Brandt.
The WCPAC usually meets the second
Thursday (Sept.-June; excluding Dec.)at 6:30pm at RESA in Wayne, room
250. For more information, please refer to the website: http://www.resa.net/specialeducation/parentadvisorycommittee . WCPAC meetings are open meetings and parents are always welcome and encouraged to attend!
Livonia PAC (LPAC) is run by Dr. Jennifer Taiariol, Administrator of
Student Services, and holds open meetings. LPAC is an organization of
parents and staff, which meets monthly at Cental Office to discuss and
learn about special education. Meetings are typically held the second Tuesday of
the month from 6:30 to 7:30. This is not really a support group, but more
of an informational group that impacts the education of students with
special needs in Livonia Public Schools. Please join us and be a part of
this exciting time in our organization!
