  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of September 15 2019

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 9/15/2019

    Good afternoon Roosevelt Elementary School,

Last week at Roosevelt our boys and girls did a nice job during our various safety drills.  Staff will continue to practice these drills throughout the school year.  Schools are safe places and we work with local law enforcement and your children to ensure they stay that way. Your child's safety is our top priority!  Please see the attached documentsthat were sent out by our school district at the start of the school year.

It was fantastic to come together as a school last Wednesday to meet and greet the study body.  Students were reminded of our expectations for seeking out an adult (look for the adult in the PINK VEST) while on recess and how RESPECT is our character element in focus for the month of September.

This week, boys and girls in grades k-4 will finalize their i-Ready assessments in math and reading.  Teachers will next administer individualized reading assessments called a running record.  A variety of student diagnostic information helps schools plan necessary curricular points of emphasis and intervention plans for struggling students.  In addition, it helps us address the needs of students who are ahead of pace with certain academic expectations.   Spring 2019 M-STEP parent reports were mailed last week to current grade four students.  Contact me if you have any questions.

At times and for a variety of reasons your child's teacher may be absent.  We have processes to secure guest teachers in case of those situations and grade-level teams support one another when that happens.  I have been blessed to have good attendance during my career, but sometimes even principals are out for conferences, meetings, or illness.  When that happens we have staff members that pick up the pieces.  In addition, I have elementary principals in other buildings and members of Central Office that can support our building as applicable.  I appreciate knowing when I can't be in the building I have a team that continues to support Roosevelt and my role.

    ASD PRESCHOOL and ASD KINDERGARTEN

Preschoolers and Kindergarten students in our ASD program are working really hard about learning their classroom routines.  Not only are they adorable, but they also bring positive energy to our school that all Roosevelt staff and k-4 students appreciate.   Since most of our ASD students ride a bus, I don't always get to touch base on a personal level with our ASD families.  As a reminder, you are a part of our PTA and all school events. If you are a parent/caregiver of a child in our ASD programs, please send me an email or give me a call anytime to let me know how things are going and I am always open to suggestions.

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of September 8 2019

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 9/8/2019

    Good evening Roosevelt Elementary School,

Happy National Grandparents Day to our Roosevelt Grandparents!  Our Roosevelt Grandparents often provide important roles in helping our students feel safe, cared for and supported.  We appreciate your support.

The first week of school went by really fast and we all did really well! Last week not only held the first day of school and all that comes with it, but a PTA meeting and Curriculum Night as well.   Relationships and routines will continue to be our main focus this second week of school.  We will have our first formal assembly this week where I will introduce the staff to our students and review assembly expectations.

We will also spend the month of September highlighting the word RESPECT and why it is one of Roosevelt the Tiger and the Livonia Public Schools core character elements.  Ask your child about Roosevelt the Tiger!  You will find Roosevelt the Tiger hanging up in every classroom and around the school.  You can also visit Roosevelt the Tiger at the OUR SCHOOL tab on our website.  Roosevelt the Tiger has many good tips on how we treat each other and how we should act at our school.

As you know, it is the start of the school year; so many important pieces of information are listed below.

    ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL

Families have been doing a great job with our arrival and dismissal procedures.  Thank you so much.  Below are a few reminders.

    • Front Loop off of Lyndon is for special education and general education busing only.
    • Kindergarten student's arrival and dismissal are at the front of the building.  The loop that you enter off of Henry Ruff near the Southwest portion of the lot is for you to either drop off or park.
    • Grades 1-4 arrival and dismissal is at the rear of the building. Grades 1-4 families may use either drop off loop that is located on Henry Ruff.  Please pull forward all the way to the storage shed.
    • Staff begins arrival supervision at 8:45 a.m.
    • If you haven't notified your child's teacher of their daily dismissal plan, please do so.

Again, we have plenty of adults outside to help you if you have any questions.  Thank you to our crossing guard, Mr. Doug, who provides safety and care each morning on the corner of Henry Ruff and Lyndon.

    ASSESSMENTS

Boys and girls in grades 1-4 will begin their i-Ready math and reading diagnostics test this week.  In addition, over the next several weeks all students will be going through a variety of other reading and math assessments as we collect evidence for next steps of instruction.  More details about your child's results will be communicated at parent-teacher conferences in October.

    BIRTHDAY TREAT REMINDERS

At Roosevelt, we recognize students' birthdays in a variety of ways and while children are made to feel special all days we ensure they feel extra special on their birthday.  This year we are requesting only non-edible birthday treats.  Again, the intent is not to take away from your child's special day, but to help us better manage allergy and food handling concerns.  Thank you for your understanding and your child's teacher will be communicating the same message in their communications.

  • Roosevelt Elementary School First Day Update

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 9/3/2019

    Good morning Roosevelt families,

It was nice to see everyone this morning at arrival.  Thank you to the Roosevelt PTA for their welcome back refreshments in the GYM. Your children are currently learning about their classroom teacher, their classmates, and how their school day will look.  This is a very exciting time for them!  I would anticipate afternoon naps may be in store with all this new information.

Thank you, Roosevelt families, for the care and patience that took place during arrival today.   We will have many staff members out at dismissal today (12:10 p.m.)  Considering it was the first day of school, we did great with our arrival procedures.

An important reminder about arrival and dismissal.

    • There is no parking on curbsides in either of our parking lots.  The curbsides are meant for drop off and pickup only.   On Thursday we can expect more typical arrival habits, so I will begin to monitor this more closely beginning then.

As you know tomorrow (Wednesday-September 4) is going to be a full day of school.  Here are some answers to a few questions/concerns you may have.

1.)  My child is complaining they are tired.

    1. Don't worry, the staff will give them time to rest as needed and provide many breaks throughout the day.  It is common for children to be tired as their bodies adjust to the new routine of school.   It really doesn't take too long to build their school stamina.  An early bedtime with plenty of rest will help.  Try to have them stay away from the electronic devices prior to bed.

    2.)  Questions about k-4 lunch?

    1. Starting on Wednesday, plenty of staff will be in the lunchroom to assist students.  Teachers will be practicing prior to lunch as well.  Please make sure you visit the school district'sfood service link if you have any questions about the lunch menu, free and reduced lunch applications, etc.

    3.)  Questions about k-4 recess?

    1. Staff practiced today and will continue to do so again tomorrow. We have many adults outside at recess duty to assist children.  I would encourage you to review ourbehavior expectations with your child.  They can be found at Roosevelt the Tiger has many good tips for our boys and girls!

Thank you for your patience and diligence with the numerous amounts of school communications that have been sent your way.  We are off to a great start!

    Good afternoon Roosevelt families,

Classroom notifications have been released!  This is an exciting time for your children and our classroom teachers.   If for some reason you are unable to access your Parent Connect portal, please review the attached document.

As a reminder, much time and consideration has been taken in developing classroom assignments. As you will recall there was an opportunity last spring to submit any student placement consideration forms to the Roosevelt office. To that end, I respectfully request that you refrain from requesting changes to your child's placement.  Changes at this time could negatively impact our staff's work to ensure we have well-balanced classrooms. The focus now is on developing strong relationships between our staff, students, and parents! If you have specific concerns at any time during the school year, I encourage you to set up an appointment with your child's teacher.

Yesterday and today have been informative days of professional learning on a variety of topics for our staff.  Tomorrow we will be busy at Roosevelt finalizing those things that need to be ready by next Tuesday to welcome our students.

For your convenience, attached is a list of arrival and dismissal doors if you want to practice with your child prior to the first day of school.

Enjoy the remaining days of vacation and stay tuned to website updates and additional emails.

    Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary August 23 Updates

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 8/23/2019

    Happy Friday Roosevelt families,

We are getting closer to the start of the 2019-20 school year.  Next week the Roosevelt staff will embark on a journey of professional development, preparation and collaboration as they get ready to welcome your children on September 3, 2019.

Thank you to Mr. Graham for his hard work over the summer getting our building in tip-top shape and to Mrs. Pac for all the behind the scenes work which is crucial to a successful startup.

Hopefully this e-blast and the previous ones from the last few weeks help to answer any questions you may have as the start of school approaches.  You can expect a formal welcome back letter from me early next week!

    FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATIONS

The Food Service Department uses an online process for processing free and reduced-price meal applications. The link is https://frapps.horizonsolana.com/LIVP01. Parents can apply online using any device that connects to the internet, including smart phones.

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR

The first day of school is quickly approaching.  Do you have any new neighbors with school age children that moved in this summer?  If so have them visit, Summer Registration so they can make sure their children(ren) are registered and ready for school.

    ROUTINES ARE IMPORTANT

It is time!  As I have mentioned the past few emails, getting back in the swing of things for school can be challenging.  One of the biggest challenges is reprogramming our sleep patterns.  Predictable, productive routines such as bedtime, dinner time, reading at home, and limits on screen time, etc. is important to slowly reintroduce at this time of year.  I would strongly consider starting next week to practice some of these routines with your child.

TEACHER PLACEMENT and BUSING INFORMATION FOR 2019-20

Parent Connect will be the location for you to find out your child's teacher.  It also includes busing information and student demographic information.  See the attached document.

    • Classroom assignments will be available on Wednesday, August 28th via Parent Connect.
    • ASD Preschool and ASD Kindergarten families will receive a notice of placement from their teachers.

    WEBSITE

We continue to make progress on our new website.  Check out the Quick Links section for the Elementary lunch menu, the arrival and dismissal doors and the traffic flow procedures.  You can also visit http://roosevelt.livoniapublicschools.org to find information about school dates, school supplies, important Parent Connect information, and many other useful pieces of information.   It is our goal to have the transfer completed to the new website by the end of September.

Have a great weekend and again be on the lookout for my Welcome Back letter early next week!
