Welcome to the Western Wayne Skill Center!
My name is Patrick Mies and I am proud to be the principal of the Western Wayne Skill Center. This position affords me the opportunity to work with some of the most fantastic students and work alongside amazing teachers, paraprofessionals, ancillary staff, and support staff.
The Western Wayne Skill Center's mission is to provide students with individualized, engaging, and powerful learning opportunities designed to promote independence and a rewarding lifestyle. Our mission truly guides us as we prepare lessons, create classes, and seek community partnerships for our students.
We are proud to be located within Garfield Community School where we share a learning community with the Great Start Readiness Program, GSRP. We have found opportunities for our students to assist the GSRP staff, which has proven to be highly beneficial for both programs.
Our school community values relationships with all stakeholders. Those who work at the Western Wayne Skill Center understand that the students that we serve are adults who happen to also be students. Our interactions with students are grounded in respect and conducted in a manner that always preserves student dignity.
I am committed to working closely with our existing and potential community partners to ensure a robust curriculum for our students. We know that students with cognitive impairments as well as
students with Autism Spectrum Disorder learn best in actual environments opposed to simulated work environments. For this reason, we must continue to seek meaningful partnerships with local managers and or business owners so that our students can experience varied and powerful learning opportunities.
Lastly, I would like to share a little about me. I began my teaching career at the Western Wayne Skill Center in 2003 and taught for a period of four years. In 2007, I taught at Churchill High School until 2012. While at Churchill, I taught one year in the Resource Room and taught within the center program for an additional four years. I became an Assistant Principal at Crestwood High School in the fall of 2012 and enjoyed my experiences very much. In January of 2016, the principal position became open at the Western Wayne Skill Center and I was very excited to apply. I began serving the Western Wayne Skill Center community as principal in February of 2016 and I truly love my job. On a personal note, my wife and I have three children Nicholas (age 4), Ava Rose (age 5), and Nora (age 7). Our home is busy, but fun!
If there is anything I can do for you or your student, please do not hesitate to contact me.
