Congratulations Hayes Elementary for once again receiving the Michigan Green School award for the 2019-2020 school year! The intent of the Michigan Green Schools Program is to encourage students to participate in activities which help them learn about preserving natural resources, protecting the environment, and promoting energy efficiency and savings.
A school is eligible to receive a green, emerald or evergreen school environmental stewardship designation when the school coordinator or students submits proper written documentation describing how the school has performed in a minimum of 10 energy saving and environmental activities. We have received the maximum amount of points and have been awarded Evergreen status!
Your Green Team met monthly with Ms. Lakatos to participate in several eco-friendly activities such as collecting recyclables (used batteries, plastic water bottles, dried up markers and school supplies), planned a Waste-Free Lunch Day, sponsored a Spirit Day to raise money to aid the rescue and recovery of wildlife injured in the Australian Bushfires, and planted a tree in front of our school.
Hayes students also participated in a Walk to School Day, hosted a DTE Energy presentation for fourth grade, taught units on the environment including plants, animals, our local watershed, and alternative energy, updated the LMC with Environmental materials, and continued to go strawless in the cafeteria.
On April 22nd, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with our families to help raise awareness about environmental issues.
Please join us at the 3rd Annual 3 B’s Community Appreciation Day at Corrado Park on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 11 AM-2 PM. The Birds, Butterflies, and Bees garden is hosting guest speaker Brian Peterson-Roest of Bee in the D who has a children's interactive presentation on the bee hive. Barson's Greenhouse Nursery is donating native plants. There will be native plant information and a tour of the children's sensory garden. Hope to see you there!
