Updates from Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of October 13 2019

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 10/15/2019

    Good afternoon Roosevelt Families,

We are ready to embark on another productive and busy week at Roosevelt Elementary.  Parent-Teacher Conferences and the Roosevelt Book Fair are scheduled for this week.  I highly recommend you visit our website as the Roosevelt Calendar and my weekly emails are kept on the home page.  The announcement section and links to the district homepage should also be helpful to keep you up to date on important school and district information.

Greetings from the library! I'm excited to announce our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair.  The Book Fair will take place in the library and will run from Friday, October 11 through Friday, October 18, 2019.  The Fair will be open during conferences, including Wednesday and Thursday evening until 8:00 pm.  Students may shop the Book Fair during second recess on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13.  Here is more exciting news:  Scholastic has created a Book Fair eWallet.  This is a digital payment method for students to use when shopping at the Book Fair. The Book Fair eWallet is a safe and convenient digital payment option for your student to shop the Book Fair cash-free.  Parents create a free account for their students and set a spending limit. Students use their eWallet to shop for the in-school Book Fair.  To set up an eWallet for your student, go to our Roosevelt Scholastic Book Fair link at:  See you at the Book Fair!  Ms. Kearns

As a reminder, Parent-Teacher Conferences for Roosevelt families will be held this Wednesday, October 16 thru Friday, October 18.  Students in grades K-4 have ½ days of school on Thursday and Friday.  Roosevelt Elementary uses an online scheduling system called PTC Fast.  Did you sign up for conferences?  If not do so today at

I have attached a Report To Parents article that discusses strategies for having a successful Parent-Teacher conference.

In addition, thank you for your feedback on your expectations for Parent-Teacher conferences.  Parents reported overwhelmingly the two most important things to leave conferences with were 1.) areas my child needs to work on and 2.)  how my child is doing (behavior, friends, etc)?

October continues to be an active month in physical education. Students practiced fire safety skills during National Fire Safety Week. Ask them to show you "Stay low and go" and "Stop, Drop, Roll". We are also working on soccer skills and will be playing some spooky Halloween games. I will be at Roosevelt during the Wednesday, October 16 evening and Friday, October 18 afternoon conference sessions if you would like to discuss your child's progress in physical education. We are excited to be hosting the Detroit Red Wings School Assembly on healthy lifestyle choices on Friday, October 18. Students can wear red and white to show their support. Finally, I am looking for rope lights for an upcoming activity.  If you have any extras or ones you no longer use, I will happily take them. Thank you for your support.

Box Tops have gone digital this year!! You can download the free app, Box Tops for Education, on your phone or tablet. Search for our school by typing in Roosevelt Elementary School or using our zip code 48154.  After scanning your receipt, before submitting, click on the star located in the bottom left corner. Please type in the last name of your child's teacher to give their classroom the credits for an upcoming contest!  All cut out box tops are still accepted!!  The deadline for fall collection is October 28th.

Parents are busy!  They can't always help at PTA events.  However, an easy way to show support for the Roosevelt PTA is to become a member. The link for parents if they wish to join online is

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Reports On Student Progress

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 10/12/2019

    Good morning Roosevelt families,

The purpose of this email is to review some reports general education K-4 families will receive in the next week as we approach Parent-Teacher Conferences.  As a reminder, your child's first marking period report card goes home on December 13.

READING PROFICIENCY REPORT (Coming home Monday with students)

Coming home this Monday in your child's home communication folder is their Reading Proficiency Report.  This report is being sent home to all elementary students in LPS.  The report will identify your student's Fountas & Pinnell reading level and their overall iReady fall reading proficiency level.  In addition, the letter will establish their Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) status.

iREADY MATH PARENT REPORT (Given to families at Parent-Teacher Conferences)

At Parent-Teacher conferences, you will receive a copy of your child's Fall iReady math report.  This report is just one of many that we use at Roosevelt to help drive instruction in the area of math.  Students will take iReady in the Winter and Spring as well.

IRIP (If applicable, given to families at Parent-Teacher Conferences)

If students do not meet the grade-level criteria for BOTH the Fountas & Pinnell reading level and the iReady proficiency level for their grade, they will qualify for an IRIP (Individual Reading Improvement Plan).  If applicable, details of the IRIP will be shared at Parent-Teacher Conferences.

READ AT HOME PLAN and ROOSEVELT COMPACT (Attached to this email and located on our website)

Attached is some more information about the Third Grade Reading Bill that discusses ways you can continue to support your child's love of reading at home.  A read at home plan is one important ingredient in ensuring all students are reading at grade level by third grade.

ROOSEVELT COMPACT and PARENT INVOLVEMENT PLAN (Attached to this email and should be returned to your child's teacher)

As a reminder, the attached Roosevelt Compact and Parent Involvement Plan is another tool that we communicate our shared efforts in ensuring your child's success at school.  Those should be signed and returned to your child's teacher.

We thank you for your continued partnership in making this a wonderful year for your child.  Thank you for your support at MOD Pizza Night last evening as well!

    Mr. Green
