Welcome to the Western Wayne Skill Center

  • Welcome to the Western Wayne Skill Center at Garfield Community School!  Our goal is to provide students with outstanding educational experiences designed to maximize skills and independence.

We also offer a variety of Community Based Instruction (CBI) classes including Child Development at Jackson Center, Retail Services at Meijer, Industrial Services at companies such as Alpha USA, Providence Worldwide, Cintas and Roush. Students may have the opportunity to intern at Livonia community sites such as the Department of Public Works, City Hall and the Rec Center.  These worksites afford students the opportunity to learn new tasks, make progress in their independence as a worker and practice other skills needed for employment in actual work settings. We are grateful to our community partners for allowing us to use their place of business as our instructional environment.

The Western Wayne Skill Center also provides students with opportunities to learn more about physical fitness, nutrition, life skills, culinary arts, horticulture, independent living and hobbies.  Monthly student clubs offer a focused opportunity for students to participate in specific hobbies such as singing/karaoke, sports, coffee house, music exploration, animal exploration, video game and craft club.

We proudly offer students a variety of all school activities, including several school dances, an annual basketball tournament, unified basketball that travels and an annual Bowling Day. These events are very popular with students and our staff.
