The Colaizzi Classroom

Welcome Back

Mrs. Kimberly Colaizzi

Mrs. Salah and Mrs. Davison

Emerson Middle School

My name is Kimberly Colaizzi and I am so happy to be your child’s teacher this year. I have taught special education in Livonia for the past 24 years and I am excited to be starting my 25th year.  This is my sixth year at Emerson Middle School and I love it!  I am so grateful to be working once again with two amazing paraprofessionals Michelle Salah and Laura Davison.  I am so honored to continue to team teach this year with Ms.Casey Loiselle.

I know we are in uncertain times right now, and this is a very unique start to our 2020-2021 school year.  Please know I am very excited to be back face to face with our students and I promise you I will do my very best each day.  I am a big believer in working together as a team in the best interest of your child. Since you know your child best, I look forward to your input at any time. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by note, voicemail, or email.

The Livonia Public School “Return to Learn Plan” requires each student returning face to face, to complete asynchronous learning assignments at home each school day. To make it as organized as possible, each student will have a binder that will go to and from school each day. A weekly communication sheet will go home each night in your child’s binder.  Please review and add any comments or questions.  Please leave the sheet in the binder throughout the week. I will collect them each Monday and add a new sheet for the week.  In the binder you will also find information for logging into my Google Classroom (this is where important information and assignments will be posted), passwords for websites your child will need to access for asynchronous & virtual learning, and paper copies of non-computer activities.

At Emerson, your child will follow a modified general education curriculum, called the Common Core Essential Elements. If at any time you have questions about the curriculum, please feel free to ask. During the first few weeks of school, we will be spending a great deal of time on classroom rules and routines,  beginning of the year assessments, as well as getting to know each other. At Emerson we believe in  “Respect, Responsibility, and Learning”.  We have “I can” statements that incorporate these ideas, posted in the classroom and we talk about them daily. Students that show they are being respectful, responsible, and doing their best learning will receive “Colaizzi Cash” throughout the week.  At the end of the week, students will count up their dollars and have the opportunity to purchase an item or special opportunity from the class PBS (Positive Behavior Supports) store. If you have any new items that you would like to donate to the class store, that would be wonderful.

At the end of each full day, students will be offered a quick afternoon snack. If you would like to send in a snack each day with your child, that would be great, especially if your child follows a specific diet (sugar free, gluten free, etc.)  If you would like to donate snacks items to the classroom, we would certainly appreciate it (crackers, pretzels, animal crackers, etc.)  Please let me know right away if your child has any food allergies or restrictions.  At this time both classrooms are NUT FREE Zones.

Items to be considered for back to school:

(please label all items)

-Lunchbox (if your child brings a lunch)

-Water Bottle (with spill proof lid)

-Bathroom items (if your child needs them)

-Extra pair of clothes to keep at school in a bag

-Extra masks (if washable, please add a labeled baggie for used masks to be sent home)

If your child has any medical concerns and requires a health care plan or health alert plan, please let me know immediately.  If your child takes medication at school, a medication authorization must be filled out. Please do not send medication on the bus or in a backpack, unless it has been approved and is part of a signed plan.

I look forward to working together toward an amazing school year!
