Ms. Shanan Wheeler
Greetings Frost Middle School Community,
It is with excitement and enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the new Principal of Frost Middle School! I am both honored and humbled by the opportunity to rejoin the Frost family after serving as Assistant Principal from the 2015/2016 through the 2018/2019 school years. I have been employed with Livonia Public Schools for two decades, enjoying the opportunity to work with amazing educators throughout the district at Churchill High School, Franklin High School, and most recently Johnson Upper Elementary.
My philosophy of education begins with building a strong school community that meets the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of all students. As the former principal of Johnson, I see an amazing opportunity for collaboration between our schools to build an exciting new partnership that best serves and prepares incoming Johnson students for their future at Frost. I am well versed in the academic requirements for high school and middle school students, and bring newly acquired knowledge of the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of early adolescent learners from my experience at Johnson. My goals for Frost remain the same, as I was a partner in contributing to the renewed climate and culture that currently exists at Frost. As an administrator, I have always focused on creating a welcoming and safe environment for students that allows them to develop a passion for learning.
I moved to Livonia long before I decided to pursue a career in education, specifically to enroll my own children (Ricquelle and Gage, age 25 and 24 respectively, both FHS graduates) in the Livonia Public Schools. It made sense for me to choose Livonia for my student teaching when I decided to transition to a career in education, and I was lucky to be placed right here at Frost Middle School. Shortly after student teaching, I began my science teaching career at Churchill High School where I taught chemistry and biology. I spent the majority of my tenure as a science teacher at Franklin High School where I taught many different courses in science and psychology, including chemistry in the International Baccalaureate Program. I also served as the Science Department Chairperson, and was actively involved in school improvement efforts and community groups such as Rotary International.
For the past year and a half, I have led the staff and students of Johnson Upper Elementary through an unprecedented pandemic and gained unique insight into the needs of these early adolescent learners. I incorporated my ability to create a building culture that is positive, fun, and energetic in my time at Johnson, much the same as I did at Frost during my time there. As a school leader, I have teamed with teachers and support staff to ensure a very diverse population of learners is given every opportunity for academic success while developing into young adults. I find myself very fortunate to again lead Frost Middle School with the same energy and passion that I have brought to each and every building where I have worked within Livonia Public Schools.
