    Depression. Irritability. Anger.

Depression. Irritability. Anger. All can be so closely interwoven for youth as they navigate the adolescent and young adult years. While some people may say, “it’s just being a teenager”, that is not always the case for every teenager. For those parents or guardians experiencing these emotions from their teenager, it can be discomforting not knowing if it is indeed just typical teenage growth or something more significant.

The Child Mind Institute, which is a national independent nonprofit in children’s mental health, provides numerous evidence-based resources for families and educators. They recently published the following articles on depression and teens as a resource for families and caregivers.

Keep in mind that no article can diagnose if a child is dealing with more than typical childhood development. So, if you are concerned, consider following up with your child’s pediatrician or your family doctor about those concerns.

Remember that your child’s school counselor and your school’s Student Assistance Provider are also available for support and resources if you are concerned about your child at school.

SHS Weekly Update for the Week of November 8, 2021

    Dear Spartans,

The end of the first marking period is upon us. Monday starts the beginning of a new marking period. We are one-quarter of the way through the school year. For some, this is a fresh start, with new beginnings. An opportunity to get out in front of assignments. For others, nothing changes, as we continue to embrace the grind. Marking Period grades will be viewable in Parent/Student Connect - Thursday 11.11.21

I want to stress to our students the importance of starting on time. Both from the standpoint of a new marking period and also about getting to class on time. This is a valuable life skill that will carry over into life after high school.  I ask for your support to have conversations with your student(s) about setting themselves up for success.

For students who are unable to be picked up immediately after school or waiting for their club/activity/sport to begin, we are asking students to report to the south cafeteria. Unless a student is meeting with a teacher or club/activity/sport, it is expected that they exit the building in a timely manner.

Mask up Spartans! Our diligence to the safety mitigations is working. As a reminder, the mask needs to fully cover the mouth and nose.

    All the best!

    Pete Mazzoni

THIS YEAR'S THEME – "I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD BY"

    THERE'S STILL TIME!

The SHS PTSA is still accepting Reflections entries until November 12th. This is a great opportunity for students looking for a creative outlet.

Each year, students create projects that are inspired by a common theme. The theme for 2021-22 is "I Will Change the World By..." Students must use the theme as inspiration and include an explanation in their artist statement that shows how the project relates to the theme.

For the full Livonia PTSA Council Reflections page, please click here.

    Weekly Update

    Dear Spartans,

As we head into the last week of the first marking period, I encourage all students to check Student Connect for any missing assignments.

The marking period officially ends Friday, November 5th. Teachers, depending on where they are with their curriculum, may end the marking period a day or two earlier, or extend it a day.

Students should double-check with their teachers as to what that class is doing.

I would also like to remind families to use the daily checklist every day before sending your students to school.

    Screening Tool for Families

As a reminder, next Tuesday, November 2nd, there is no school. SHS staff will be engaged in professional development. Their time will be spent in their district teams and building-based professional learning communities to determine the next steps for learning and growing our students.

    All the best!

Livonia Public Schools would like you to know that a Student Assistance Program is established in each high school triad. The primary purpose of the program is to provide information and support to students who are in crisis or have ongoing problems which put them at risk for failure. In addition, the Student Assistance Provider (SAP) works closely with parents and community agencies in making referrals that can further support students and their families. Please stop into the Guidance office to speak with someone.         SAP site with helpful resources, hotlines, and upcoming events.

    SHS Weekly Update

    Dear Spartans,

There are two weeks left in the first marking period. Let's make a Spartan effort to turn in all missing assignments. Check student/parent connect. Strive for excellence.

Thanks to all of the parents who were able to participate in our conferences. The importance of having strong positive relationships with all stakeholders is beneficial to our students' success.

Please make sure you have your student continue to answer the two questions that appear on the COVID-19 Daily Screener link every day.  If your student happens to answer “Yes” to questions 1 and/or 2, please have them stay home.

As an additional reminder, students should also stay home from school if they...

Are awaiting the results of a COVID test, please have them stay home.

Have been exposed to COVID, please have them stay home.

For all of these scenarios or when in doubt, students should stay home and contact their assistant principal.

Additionally, We want to remind all Spartans of the importance of wearing their masks properly. The nose and mouth should be covered completely. Let's do our best to protect ourselves and our fellow Spartans.

    All the best!
    Pete Mazzoni

Remember that sign-ups will remain open until Monday 10.18.21 @ 12:00 pm. Please note that conferences are primarily intended for families of students who are struggling in their classes. This information is shared with you since you may not be able to schedule a conference with every teacher.  You may also notice some teachers will have limited slots because they are split between two buildings.  You are encouraged to contact your student’s teacher via email if you do not see an available time slot that works with your schedule.

Parent Directions: Registering for HS Parent/Teacher Conferences with PTCFast.com

You can begin signing up for virtual conferences on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at 12:00 pm.

The site will be open until Monday, October 18, 2021, at 12:00 pm.

Sign-up is first-come, first-serve due to the limited number of slots each day.

Parent tasks to set up P/T conferences:

    • Click on the school conference link or you can find it in the “Communications Corner” section of our school’s website.
    • Select all the teachers you need to see for your child.  Click “submit”.
    • Choose the option on the screen that applies to what you are scheduling.
    • Fill in the fields for Student First Name, Student Last Name, your (parent) name, your (parent) email address, your (parent) email address again to confirm it, then a phone number.  Click “submit”.
    • Go to the email account you used to register and open the email from PTCFast that says, “Select date/time for Teacher Conference Now”.
    • Click on the link in the email message that says, “Click here to select conference time”.
    • Select the day and time you want to meet with each of the teachers shown on the screen.
    • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “confirm selections and exit” if you are done.  If you need to schedule additional conferences, click “register for additional classes”.
    • You will get an email sent to the email address you used when registering with PTCFast that has your conference schedule and the virtual conference links for each teacher--these are the links you will use to access your conferences.  Please note that each link will be different, as each teacher has their own meeting link.

Parent tasks to access P/T conferences during your scheduled day and time:

    • Open the email from PTCFast that was sent to you after you chose the times for your conferences--the links to get to the virtual conferences are in that email.
    • When it’s time for a particular conference, click on that teacher’s conference link in the email from PTCFast and that will put you into the waiting room for that teacher.  The teacher will let you in from the waiting room when it is time for your conference.
    • Please remember that we are running five-minute conferences to meet with as many parents as possible.  We must stay on schedule to ensure parents are not waiting longer than necessary to meet with a teacher and then potentially missing their scheduled time with the next teacher.
