    STUDENT ASSESSMENT DATA

Be on the lookout this week in your child's home communication folder regarding various student assessment reports.

Reading Proficiency Report: As applicable, this report will identify your student's current Fountas & Pinnell reading level and their overall iReady reading proficiency level.  In addition, this report will establish your child's Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) status for our next Intervention Window that starts next week.   If students do not meet the grade-level criteria for BOTH the Fountas & Pinnell reading level and iReady proficiency level they will qualify for an IRIP (see below) during Intervention Window 2.

Math i-READY Parent Report: This report will visually show you your child's results on our latest round of i-Ready math testing.

Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) Window 1: If your child had an IRIP during our first intervention window, a copy will be sent home which will detail reading growth your child has made this year.

Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) Window 2: If your child qualifies for an IRIP during our second intervention window per the reading proficiency report, two copies will be sent home which will detail your child's upcoming reading goals and their read at home plan.  A signed copy needs to be returned to school.

As a reminder, to address this mid-year academic data, every classroom will continue to have a designated period of each day devoted to providing additional supports to struggling learners and enrichment/extension activities for children who are scoring at or above grade level on their assessments.  We will also count on you for a home plan to help your child be successful with their grade-level expectations.  This Third Grade Reading link contains many informational documents from Wayne County RESA, which highlights the third grade-reading bill and the importance of early literacy.  Thank you for being an active partner in your child's education.

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of January 19 2020

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 1/19/2020

    January 19, 2020

    Good morning Roosevelt families,

Look what I wrote last year on January 20, 2019.  I think the message holds true again this week.

    Good morning Roosevelt families,

Who said they missed the snow? Haha!  Be careful on the roads, enjoy the new landscapes and don't overdo it with snow removal.

Below is the rest of my message from last year at this time.  It holds true as well.  Items that are new are in bold and underlined.

This week the Roosevelt staff will have the opportunity to meet and review our student's academic and social/emotional progress.  Since the start of the school year, our students have made continual progress in their academic and social/emotional development.  It is important to note, that not all areas of student growth can be objectively measured.  As Walt Whitman once stated in his work "Song Of Myself," "... I am large, I contain multitudes."  Our students are more than their reading levels, more than their math level.  They contain many parts that make each and every one of our Roosevelt Tigers unique.   Just right interventions are being finalized for our second intervention Window that begins February 3, 2020.

Here are a few key takeaways from our review of academic data thus far this year:

    • Students are moving in the right direction through a combination of a growth mindset and impactful educational practices by their teachers.  Teachers in K-4 will be meeting this week in what we call a Data Dive to examine our school and classroom next steps based on our mid-year assessments.
    • Students who have a family practice that supports reading/math at home (i-Ready, RAZ KIDS, ready to their child, talking to their child about their day, reviewing take-home materials like Home Links and books, etc.) showed some of our greatest gains.

I continue to be amazed by the hard work and dedication of our staff.  Our staff develops lessons that are engaging and also at the correct level of challenge for students. In addition, they take care of your most precious resource(s) each and every day. You can imagine with almost 400 different learners in our school that can be a daunting task.  However, those that can; teach!  We are a profession filled with people who do this job because we care about the future of our communities and who don't mind putting our needs last.  We are a group who care deeply about your children and see the potential in every human being.  We are thankful for our tremendous parental support and are blessed to be able to do this work.

I have a dream that one-day education is held in the eyes, hearts, and minds of society as one of the greatest and most important professions in the world.  What is your dream for your child and our society?   It might be nice to take a break on Monday and have that conversation with one another.   I would also encourage you to visit https://www.livoniapublicschools.org/domain/706 to learn about the School Finance Research Collaborative.

    Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Children do not have school on Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I believe it is important that our boys and girls understand why we don't have school on certain days throughout the school year.  A few websites that explain the significant contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. can be found at:

Dr. King's August 28, 1963 speech in Washington, D.C. continues to inspire me every time I listen to the words and the message it conveys.

    January 12, 2020

Roosevelt Tigers did an amazing job last week adapting back to our school routines.  The next four months are when we really tend to see the greatest growth in student learning.  By this time of the year, there are no mysteries as to the routines of the class and school, positive and productive relationships with students and families have been established and we have plenty of achievement data on students to make mid-year teaching adjustments.  We look forward to seeing this growth and are excited about the upcoming months.

Thank you to the Roosevelt PTA and Mr. Graham for hosting our family movie night this past Friday evening.

    ART NEWS FROM MRS. CONNORS

    November and December

    • Kindergarteners learned about abstract art and created art by tearing paper and gluing it collage style to another paper. Next, they created a self -portrait and then we read the story Mouse Paintand created colors from the 3 primary colors on our own mouse.
    • 1stGrade learned how lines become shapes and we did a shape search in the art room and then a shape project. Then we learned about the primary colors and painted with them.
    • 2ndGrade finished their texture project and then began learning about symmetry and just finished some cute symmetrical snowman using snowflakes they made for the body.
    • 3rdGrade learned about organic and geometric shapes. They made fun lava lamps using those shapes and then painted a color wheel after learning about the primary and secondary colors.
    • 4thGrade learned about perspective in art and created a snowman using a different perspective than usually done with oil pastels. Those were messy. Then they had a review of primary and secondary color and completed a color wheel.

The whole school will begin a clay unit in January!!! It's their favorite and mine!!

    SNOW and the COLD

We escaped December with very little snow!  The frigid temperatures and snow may be back in January or they may give us a break for a little longer. Nonetheless please ensure your children are dressed for the weather.   Please know that children who don't have boots, coat, gloves/mittens, and snow pants are discouraged from playing in the snow.  Sitting in wet clothes all day isn't fun! We go outside if temperatures are 15 degrees or above when including the wind chill factor or as they call it today the RealFeel.

THANK YOU FROM MR. DOUG our CROSSING GUARD
