Updates from Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of December 8 2019

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 12/8/2019

    Good morning Roosevelt Families,

Report cards will go home on Friday!  If you have any questions about your child's progress, please contact their teacher.

As I have mentioned before, occasionally I look back at my old report cards.  Some of the information my teachers wrote years ago still holds true, yet at other times I can't remember the student they are referring to.  However, as a parent and as a principal, the skills about a child's behavior, attitude, teamwork, and work ethic continue to be the area of the report card I value most.  In some subjects, it took me several years to become confident and proficient.  In other subjects, I captured the concepts right away.  Children today are no different.  We all learn at a different pace and often our interests and innate skills lead us to success more quickly in some areas than in others.  A solid academic education is priceless, yet how I behaved, treated others, and my work habits were always the areas my parents valued the most.  Mrs. Green and I were no different with our own children during their elementary years.  Citizenship matters!

There is time to grow into that future nurse, teacher, engineer, IT programmer, construction worker, doctor, salesman, etc.  However, every day is an opportunity to become a better version of yourself.  I look forward to our Roosevelt Tigers continued effort towards approaching and meeting their grade level standards.  What part of the report card do you most value?

THINGS TO DO WITH THIS EBLAST

    ·      Read the information.

    ·      Open and review the various attachments.

i-READY USAGE and RAZ KIDS READING

Keep up the good work with i-Ready usage and RAZ KIDS. The next few weeks we will have less time to work on i-Ready as our students will be taking the i-Ready Reading and Math diagnostic.   For grades 1-4 this will be the second diagnostic of the school year and for Kindergarten students this will be their first attempt. This data along with classroom performance and other assessments will help drive our classroom and intervention instruction when we return from break.

    GOODFELLOWS TOY DRIVE

Thank you for your support of our outreach during our Goodfellows Food Drive.  The attached document explains our Goodfellows Toy Drive which runs to December 20, 2019.

    LOST AND FOUND REMINDER

Our lost and found is filling up.  Is your child missing something?  If so, come and take a look.  We will be donating all leftover items around December 19 to charity.

    PERFECT ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATES REMINDER

Perfect attendance certificates for November and December will be combined.  Sometimes we get sick, sometimes we have appointments, and that is ok. However, I feel strongly to support students who exhibit outstanding attendance habits at school!

SECOND GRADE YOUTH MAKING A DIFFERENCE PROJECT

Over 100 stuffed animals were donated for the second grade Youth Making A Difference project.  Teachers and some community members will be visiting U of M Mott Children's Hospital this weekend to deliver these stuffed animals.  Stay tuned for some pictures and thank you for your support of our students showing character in action and making a difference for others.

    PTA SWEETS FOR STAFF

Please help us thank our wonderful Roosevelt staff by sending in a batch or two of cookies or other baked goodies.  Your donation will be used to make up a sampler tray for staff members to enjoy at home. You or your child may drop off your homemade or store-bought goodies in the office on Monday, December 16th.

Thank you for supporting our Roosevelt family! Any questions can be directed to Cassie Walczyk at mcwalczyk1@gmail.com

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of December 1 2019

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 12/1/2019

    Good morning Roosevelt Families,

I hope your Thanksgiving break has been restful and relaxing.  Mine was very relaxing until the Wolverines lost big to the Buckeyes.  Unfortunately, this now feels like a yearly tradition!

As you know, we have three weeks of school until Winter Break.  The upcoming holiday season brings forth many emotions and I think it is important we take our time and try to enjoy each day, each other and not look too far ahead.  Therefore, let us not miss out and fail to appreciate the great things happening at Roosevelt and in our own lives in the upcoming weeks.  The holidays will be here soon enough!

This week concludes the first marking period.  Our staff will be working on report cards this Friday as students have the day off of school.  Starting next week, we will begin our look into student's reading and math progress as we begin our second i-Ready diagnostic testing window. In addition, report cards go home on Friday, December 13. It is awesome to see such progress from our Tigers and it is important to note that progress looks different for each of our students.

As you will see below, from December 10-12 we have our annual Holiday shop as well which is a favorite Roosevelt tradition.  Your help is needed to make this event great for our students as they are always excited to shop for their loved ones.

SECOND GRADE YOUTH MAKING A DIFFERENCE PROJECT

This year the second graders have been learning about Theodore Roosevelt and how he inspired the creation of the teddy bear. On a hunting trip, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree. His compassion prompted a toymaker to create a stuffed bear in his honor!

This story prompted the second grade to show some compassion of their own, so they created the "Roosevelt Rough Riders", a group of tenacious students who have set out to collect teddy bears to donate to sick children at U of M Mott Children's Hospital.

If you would like to support our cause, please send in a brand-new teddy bear with the tag still on. We will be collecting bears until December 6th, after which they will be transported to U of M. A collection box is in the office!

    Thank you for your support!
