Updates from Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of March 29 2020

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/29/2020

    Good afternoon Roosevelt families,

As a reminder, this past Friday afternoon all teachers communicated their weekly enrichment and reinforcement plans to our families.  These optional enrichment opportunities hopefully will provide your family with a structure that is so desperately needed during this time away from school.  You can expect these learning plans every Friday(with the exception of Spring Break).  At this time, there is no work to turn in, just to complete at your leisure the following week. You will also find links to these Weekly Enrichment plans on your teacher's webpage.

The ideas teachers and families have put together over the past several weeks have been interesting, inspiring and reinforce Roosevelt's core principles of strong relationships and high academic expectations for all students.  In addition, the various work from all stakeholders aligns well with our school district's mission which is to educate, challenge and inspire every student to achieve personal success and become a confident contributor to society.

I miss all of you so much!  Stay positive, stay engaged, and stay connected.

    PE UPDATES FROM MRS PLUM

Hello Roosevelt Families! I hope you are doing well. I miss my Roosevelt Tigers so much, but I am embracing this time I have with my own children at home. Staying active is a key component to staying healthy. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents should engage in moderate to vigorous activity for 60 minutes each day. Breaking it down into smaller segments still counts. The Plum kids and I take a morning and an afternoon walk. My son is motivated by timing things so improving his lap time around the pond by our house is a powerful motivator to keep him moving. Putting on a song and dancing for 4 or 5 minutes several times a day is another way that we are staying active and relieving stress. Your grade level enrichment packets have many other ideas. If there is anything I can do for you during this time, please reach out to me via email: splum@livoniapublicschools.org

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/17/2020

    Dear Roosevelt Families,

Our school district sent a detailed email out yesterday. Please read it carefully. Please note our district website has copies of all communications regarding COVID-19.

Some hot topics that many families asked about are listed below:

    1. Click Here for the District Resources Home Page for K-4 Students.
    2. Food Distribution will be provided to families weekly. See attached,or  Click Here.
    3. Spring Break will be regularly scheduled with students returning on Monday, April 13.

I know there have been many correspondences coming out lately from the school district and from Roosevelt Elementary School.  We do this to keep you informed and out of our deep care for all of our families.

While the COVID-19 situation has caused a great disturbance to many of our daily activities, I wanted to acknowledge some wonderful and heartfelt observations I have noticed over the past week.

    • Numerous Roosevelt families contacting the school offering their assistance to our community.
    • LPS Staff working hard to communicate to families and provide resources (see above)during this time off from school.
    • Local faith-based and civic organizations moving their forces into the community to reach out to all those in need.
    • Our medical professionals who like educators meet each person where they are at and are taking care of our most vulnerable.
    • Local, State, and National agencies coordinating efforts in the care of their citizens.

This doesn't make the situation any less concerning, but it does make me proud of our society and the deep care we innately have for one another.

This is our time to show the best versions of ourselves!

Stay tuned for updates and let your children know we miss them and hope to see them soon.

  • Roosevelt Elementary March 16 Update

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/16/2020

    Good morning Roosevelt families,

Today our building will be open from 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.  Please review the emails from this past weekend from myself and the school district.  You can also find copies of these correspondences on our school and district websites.  We are here for you and as you know new information will be coming out periodically as our school district receives updates.  Please stay patient!

Here is the process today should you need to come to school.

    • Please pull up in the front loop(yes, you have permission today to do so. HaHa!)
    • A member of your family enters our front vestibule and states their business (Chromebook pickup, materials, medicine, etc.)
    • A member of our staff will assist that family.  Today's visit is intended to be quick.  We will have time in the near future to catch up with one another.
    • Once that family pulls out of the parking lot, cars pull up and the next family enters the building.  Think of it like you are at a McDonald's drive thru!
Roosevelt families are awesome and I appreciate all the requests for help.  Stay tuned to community updates not only from our school district but also local, state, and national agencies.

    Warmest wishes,

    Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of March 15 2020

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/14/2020

    Good afternoon Roosevelt families,

On behalf of the entire Roosevelt staff we hope all is well as we are currently in a time period that is quite new to all of us.   During this time off from school, your child's well-being continues to be a high priority for our staff.

In replacement of my normal weekend eblast to the community, the purpose of this email is to ask you to please review the various attached documents that were sent home from our school district this past Friday evening.  Our school district's homepage is also an excellent source of information as well.

One section from the parent FAQ document I would ask you take immediate review of is our processes for this upcoming Monday, March 16.

What if my child needs to pick up personal items from the school?

We realize that the closure did not allow our students and staff the opportunity to gather their personal belongings. We will have one open time frame during which students and parents may briefly stop by the schools to collect items they may need. This includes student medications (to be picked up only by parents/guardians).

The open hours will be from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Monday, March 16. Please use the front vestibule entrance only. After that time, we will not be allowing entrance into the schools, due to the ongoing deep cleaning that will be taking place. We are seeking to keep the schools as disinfected and sanitized as possible for student and staff return. If there is a hardship in accessing needed medications, please notify your student's principal via email. If you have duplicate medications at home, please consider leaving the medications at the school for use upon student return.

As we move forward I would encourage you to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.  Our school district will continue to provide updates along the way.

    Warmest wishes,

    Mr. Green

  • Roosevelt Elementary School PTA Airtime Event

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/12/2020

    Dear Roosevelt Families,

As you read in Mrs. Oquist's letter that was emailed to the community yesterday, Governor Whitmer issued State Recommended Community Mitigation Strategies for school districts, businesses and other organizations, based on the known cases of COVID-19 in the state of Michigan. This guidance included cancelling or postponing non-essential activities and gatherings of more than 100 people. As such, our PTA Airtime event scheduled for this Friday has been cancelled.

Please note our school district has updates on COVID-19 on our school districts homepage.

    Thank you for your partnership!

  • Roosevelt Elementary School Week of March 8 2020

Posted by WILLIAM GREEN on 3/8/2020

    Good afternoon Roosevelt families,

Last week we had several building events.  It was renewing to see all of our incoming 2020-2021 Kindergarten parents on Thursday at Kindergarten Parent Information Night.  In addition, a big thank you to all the families who attended Roosevelt Literacy Parent Night.  Thank you to representatives from the Livonia Public Library for attending.  Having a library card is such an easy and impactful practice to foster the love of literacy.  Visit https://livonialibrary.info to learn more about the multitude of services our local libraries provide.   If you have any questions about the Read by Grade 3 law, please contact me or see the attached document.  The bottom line is that we have systems in place to meet the needs of all learners.  Retention is not a practice that is supported by research or one we will be utilizing when addressing the Read by Grade 3 law.

This week finds us having no school for students on Tuesday, March 10 due to Primary Voting.  In addition, on Friday, March 13 students have a ½ day of school, as teachers will be working on report cards that afternoon.

Report cards for marking period 2 will go home on March 20.  One of my favorite quotes about report cards and grades is "Grades are where students are as learners, not who they are as learners."  We need to remember that quote whether we are reviewing results from the classroom, i-Ready, the M-STEP assessment or when reviewing our children's report cards. This Friday teachers will be working on those marking period 2.

THINGS TO DO WITH THIS EBLAST

    • Read the information.
    • Open and review the various attachments.
    • Continue to support March is Reading Month.  See attached!

A MUSICAL UPDATE FROM MRS. WEST

In Music class, we are slowly starting to explore musical options for our Art & Music Night, which will be Thursday May 14. Mark your calendars for this amazing evening! Fourth Graders continue to learn the recorder and I am very proud of their accomplishments! Recorders are a great stepping stone experience for band and orchestra. Third graders continue to learn the ukulele. Thanks to the Roosevelt PTA for completing our class set of ukuleles!

    READING ROCKS

There will be casual musical performances at Book BINGO Night! Thursday March 26, from 6-7:30 p.m. Any Roosevelt student attending is welcome to come up and perform with a mixed grade group. We will be singing songs from music books we have read in class. It would be great to have a couple parents volunteer that night to help with sound and instruments. Let me know if you can help. Thank you!

    MUSIC ROOM NEEDS

I am looking for a parent who would be willing to put fresh sandpaper on our sandpaper blocks. Any type of sandpaper is fine. It would need to be glued, then stapled to the blocks. Please let me know if you are interested in helping us refresh our classroom sandpaper blocks! awest10@livoniapublicschools.org
