A few years ago, we implemented a duck program in one of our courtyards at the Western Wayne Skill Center. Our students got to hold the ducks, feed them, provide fresh water, retrieve eggs, change their bedding, etc. It was a great learning opportunity!

Due to COVID-19, and the statewide mandatory school shutdown, we gave those ducks to a family near Jackson, Michigan as we were unable to care for them while learning remotely.

On October 22, 2021,  we acquired 3 new adult ducks. They were purchased from a conservationist in Fenton, Michigan. Students have shown a lot of enthusiasm with the ducks' recent arrival and our feathered friends appear to enjoy their new home! Students in the Horticulture/Culinary Arts classes named the ducks Daisy (brown duck), Pebbles (white duck), and Maggie (black duck). Our ducks are all of different Heritage breeds. One is an Ancona, the other is a Magpie, and we also have one that's a Silver Apple Yard.

When they begin laying eggs, which is expected late winter, our students in our culinary programs will use those eggs as they learn more about cooking and baking.

If you have any questions related to the ducks, please don't hesitate to ask!!

Sincerely,
